Anyway, Rujano clinched a good 10th position, with a 2:11 gap from Spanish Igor Anton.

Rujano himself was the best of his team in the stage-15, Giro’s hardest one, 229 km from Conegliano to Gardeccia/Val di Fassa, almost 7 hours on saddle. Androni’s rider placed 6th, 2:35 behind Iberian Mikel Nieve and only 44 behind pink jersey’s holder, Alberto Contador. Rujano took 6th in the overall as well, with a 8:39 gap.

Venezuela’s Josè Rujano (Androni Giocattoli) and his “Bianchi Oltre” took an outstanding win on Grossglockner summit, 2.137m high, 40 years since the Giro had made its only previous visit to Austria’s famous mountain. On Friday, May 20th, the 13th stage allowed Alberto Contador to mortgage 94th Giro d’Italia overall: as over Etna last Sunday, only Rujano kept his pace but this time they reversed the roles outpassing the finish line, with Josè raising his arms to celebrate one of his career’s most exciting wins. Contador showed great fair-play to admit Rujano all worthy: “He was the strongest today”, Alberto said, however being very happy the result he bagged.

On the uphill Contador showed once again that for the moment at least he is in a different class at this race but Rujano stood comparison with him, establishing himself as a high-class climber definitively. “It was really a great result I got in adverse weather conditions, since I’m used to feel hot. I have to thank Savio and Bellini for having given the opportunity to throw me again and make all this possible. Contador is the undisputable number one in this Giro but I’ve still lot of things to do, I would like to round off the podium and possibly win two further stages!”, Rujano explained.

Giro’s Austrian stage also looks like the tenth Androni’s gem stone throughout their fantastic Giro d’Italia, have a look to the figures: up to now, two stage wins (Angel Vicioso in Rapallo and Rujano on Grossglockner summit), one time runner-up (on Etna, with Rujano himself), 2 times placed third (Josè Serpa in Orvieto, Roberto Ferrari in Fiuggi Terme), other five times in the Top-5 (Ferrari fourth in Parma, Teramo and Ravenna and fifth in Tropea; Serpa fourth in Castelfidardo) and Super Team ranking’s leadership: they’re Giro’s real discovery beyond any dispute.
